![]() This puts a hold on all things that need that resource while they wait for the I/O request to complete. If the resource is not there, it must call out to the hard drive for the resource. This is the fastest memory on your computer and therefore it's best to check it first (usually). When your processor requests access to a particular resource it begins by checking the cache. This brings us to why Inboard Memory is separated from Outboard Memory. As you have probably guessed, programs cannot be run from your hard drive, so they must always be loaded into memory. To do this, the OS loads each of these programs into memory and then begins executing them. During this time other programs are started up. It goes ahead and starts up and shows you your desktop. Now that your OS is loaded it can start running. First you've got all your stuff on your hard drive like Steam and Chrome and your OS. Now let's talk about how programs are loaded onto your computer. Ok so we've got several levels of memory. This is where your hard drive is located. The reason these are in the Inboard Memory section will be explained in a second. Cache is a faster RAM and registers are the fastest. The section Main Memory is what you know as RAM. 25Īs you can see, we have several levels of memory. From Operating Systems: Internals and Design Principles pp. So now that that is clear let's go over how RAM works: Mod: A mod or modification is the alteration of the program code of a video game in order to make it operate in a manner different to its original version I think the downvotes really speak for themself, but just to inform you: This gif was made with literally no mods installed, however, which is why I labeled it as such. Whether you feel this counts as a "mod" comes down to your own opinion of what that means, and you're certainly not wrong to disagree with me. As far as the game cares, it's a Vanilla item - it's just a normal gun, with a normal sprite (which happens to be a dog), and a normal projectile with some special properties (which happens to make tiny dogs). The majority of things that mods do depend upon those asset changes - if you remove a mod, new items it added cease to exist (converted into generic items) modified assets turn back to normal and anything that technically exists in Vanilla, but references sprites added by the mod, stops showing up, because those sprites are now gone.īut Dog Gun doesn't require a mod to continue operating (although a mod is used to make it, as I've explicitly mentioned Cheat Engine isn't necessary). ![]() News Images Livestream Patch Notes Build Let's Play Question Fan Art Modding Discussion Video Nightly SpoilersĪ mod is, specifically, something that adds new or modifies existing assets.
